Large-Format Floor Tile: How to Get a Flat, Clean Result

Finished large-format gray porcelain floor in a bright room with windows

Large-format porcelain gives a floor fewer grout lines and a calm, open look. The same size that makes it look clean also makes every uneven edge easy to see.

It starts under the tile

A flat floor needs a flat base. The subfloor is checked before tiling, and an uncoupling membrane is often installed between the subfloor and the tile to separate the tile from small movements underneath.

Leveling systems

Leveling clips and wedges hold the edges of neighboring tiles at the same height while the setting material cures. The result is a floor without raised corners, called lippage.

Layout decisions

  • Direction of the tiles in relation to the longest wall and the main entry.
  • Where cut pieces will land, so no thin sliver ends up at a doorway.
  • Grout color: close to the tile for a calm floor, or contrasting.
  • Transitions to wood or other floors in connected rooms.

Quick answers.

The short version of this guide.
