Heated Tile Floors: What to Know Before You Install

Blue radiant heating cable routed through a white studded membrane before tile installation

Tile is durable and easy to clean, and it also feels cool underfoot. Electric radiant floor heating solves that by warming the floor from directly beneath the tile.

How it goes in

A studded membrane is installed over the subfloor. Heating cable is pressed into the membrane in evenly spaced runs through the areas you walk on. The tile is then set directly over the membrane, so the heat sits close to the surface.

Decisions to make first

  • Which rooms, or which parts of a room, should be heated.
  • Where the thermostat will be mounted.
  • How the system will be connected. Electrical work requires a licensed electrician.
  • The tile that will go over the heat.

Plan it with the tile

Radiant heat is installed in the same sequence as the floor tile. Adding it later means removing the floor, so the best moment to decide is before the tile project starts.
